Brains and Beauty
Naommon is the Boy We’re All in Love With

Princess Julia: You’re so beautiful! Where are you from?
Naommon: Hello. Ooh, thanksÉbut believe me, this foundation has a lot to do with it! I’m from France.

PJ: How did you get into writing and producing music?
N: As a child, I had the same great teachers as everyone: Michael, Prince and Madonna. I also had a strong interest for UK pop music from the Eighties: George Michael, Boy George, Duran Duran. I had a real shock the day I heard “Good Life” from Inner City. And then someone offered me Deee-Lite’s “World Clique” album for my tenth birthday and I have never, ever recovered from it. (Even today I’m still amazed with its brilliance and extreme quality of songs like “What Is Love,” “Good Beat,” or “ESP.”) This masterpiece propelled me into electronic-club dance music exploration. I met French electronica producers Danton Eeprom, Copyshop and Dondolo with whom I wrote my first LP, “Allnighter.” All my ideas and melodies are from my head and my job is to catch them. I would say that I bring them to life with my mouth. I hear melodies all the time, even when I sleep. I guess that this could be called “popdisease.” I don’t think there’s a cure for it!

PJ: You’re lyrics are sensitive.
N: I like the idea of playing with words. I like the poetry and the beauty of the words for themselves. Whether it’s French or English, even if the sense is not always obvious or meaningful. I like word mixtures and the combinations and that because of this, everyone will hear their own version of my songs.

PJ: How would you describe your musical style?
N: I would describe it as “electro-purple-flue-plastic-sulky-acid-soul-clashy-disco-sequin-pop,” but first and foremost I would say its dance music.

PJ: How would you describe your personal style, fashion and image? N: It depends on the mood I’m in. Sometimes I like to be adventurous, sometimes a little bit more classic. I’m just an obsessive and total fashion freak and I love and want everything! I like playing doll with myself, maybe because of the frustration of not having been able to when I was a little boy. Most of the time I’m interested in exploring total emancipation and ripping rules in shreds: I seek freedom.

PJ: What are your future plans, record releases, gigs?
N: I’m still working with many producers (Kiko, Julian Creance, Andy Garner, Copyshop, Human Body, Franz and Shape). In the future I would love to get to work with Riton, Basement Jaxx, Armand Van Helden and Prefuse 73. Whatever happens I just will never stop popdisease = incurable and I just love it.
